about
The song is originally from Happy End’s 1971 album, Kazemachi Roman, which Rolling Stone called the “greatest Japanese rock album of all time.” And In 2007, Rolling Stone Japan declared this album "The greatest Japanese rock album of all time", with 'Kaze Wo Atsumete' undeniably standing out as the band's biggest hit.
Over the last 50 years, numerous Japanese artists have covered this song. However, after the track was featured on Sophia Coppola's 2003 film 'Lost In Translation' soundtrack, it became a genuine international hit, inspiring countless YouTube covers worldwide.
Thanks to the film’s popularity, Happy End was belatedly introduced to a global audience. In a TV documentary, Hosono mentioned that, more than 30 years after the song's release, Americans have approached him on the street, singing the song to him.
lyrics
✍️ Lyrics:
🇬🇧
Outskirts of the city, strolling down elongated alleys,
Through the stained mist, I saw a morning tram crossing the sea.
That's why I also want to gather the winds, gather the winds,
And run across the blue sky, across the blue sky.
As I passed through a beautiful sunrise
I saw a city with a scarlet sail that was anchored
Beyond the empty-looking breakwater.
That's why I also want to gather the winds, gather the winds,
And run across the blue sky, across the blue sky.
In a deserted morning café, passing time,
Through fractured glass, I witnessed the skyscrapers
Brushing against the pavement.
That's why I also want to gather the winds, gather the winds,
And run across the blue sky, across the blue sky.
